If you have not had counselling before you may be wondering if it would help and how it works.
Counselling is a collaborative process the aim of which is to leave you feeling better than you did before you started. As a humanistic counsellor I believe we all have the potential to live rich and fulfilling lives whatever has happened in the past.
I will explore with you how the past might influence your present experience, looking at past experiences as information rather than the focus of our work together. We will explore your strengths, passions, and ways in which you might block yourself from reaching out for what you want. I will not give you advice but I will share relevant theory and give you feedback when I think that would be helpful to you so that you can find your own solutions to the issues that you face. The counselling process is designed to empower you to make your own choices by putting you in touch with what is truly important and meaningful to you.
Often counselling involves exploring painful feelings as by processing those feelings in a safe, supportive environment they become less painful and more manageable. I will always respect your innate wisdom about what and when you wish to explore things you are finding difficult in the past and the present. Some clients just want to talk but many find working creatively (using objects, art materials etc) is very helpful and this is a way of working that I am able to offer.
I am also trained to offer specific ways of working to deal with trauma which are containing, holding and safe and find that a mindful approach can be very helpful for clients experiencing anxiety and depression.
